I am just starting this journey and will be attending the meeting at Anderson Campus on Thursday night.I went to Dr. El Charr about a year ago because of my Gerd and he suggested Gastric surgery.  However, I have moderate COPD and Barrett's and I wonder if I will even be accepted into the program.  I keep reading about everyone have heartburn problems.  I would like to have the sleeve rather than the bypass. Thanks for any feedback.

If you have Barrett's, you will not be able to have the sleeve. Barrett's patients can only have the RNY gastric bypass. Sleeve patients have a higher chance of getting reflux and since you already have reflux and Barrett's, the sleeve would not be an option. As far as your COPD, our surgeons would probably want to hear from your pulmonologist. They will want to know that your respiratory condition is the best it can be and that your pulmonologist agrees with you undergoing surgery. We operate on many patients and they are all unique with different medical conditions. We will want to make sure you are in the best health possible. COPD is not a contraindication for surgery. We have operated on patients with COPD in the past. We will just make sure your respiratory status is optimal.
